Naming tips for writers
Match the world. A name should feel native to its setting. Fantasy names can lean lyrical or harsh depending on the culture you build; science-fiction names often evoke space, energy, or technology; modern names should sound plausible in the real world; and historical names should fit the era so readers aren't pulled out of the period.
Keep it pronounceable. If readers stumble over a name, they tend to skim past it. Say each name aloud and watch for clusters of consonants or apostrophes that add complexity without earning their meaning.
Vary name shapes. A cast where every name ends in “-ia” or starts with the same letter blurs together. Mix lengths, endings, and first letters so characters stay distinct in the reader’s mind.
Let names hint at character. Surnames and sounds can subtly suggest personality, origin, or social class without spelling it out — a small cue that helps a character feel real from their first appearance.
