How chapter length varies by genre and pacing
There is no single "correct" chapter length. Chapters are a pacing tool: short chapters accelerate momentum and create cliffhangers, while longer chapters allow scenes to breathe and develop. The right length depends on your genre, audience, and the rhythm you want the reader to feel.
Genre norms (rough averages): thrillers and middle-grade novels often lean short (1,000–2,500 words) to keep pages turning; literary fiction and epic fantasy tend longer (3,000–5,000+ words); non-fiction chapters commonly run 3,000–5,000 words. Young adult novels frequently sit around 2,000–3,500 words per chapter.
